The Value of Education

Growing up, one of the values my parents instilled in me was the importance of an education. My mom would always say that it is very important to learn as much as possible, taking advantage of every opportunity in education offered, because once you learn something it becomes yours and no one can take it away from you. For my parents, knowledge equals both keys and power. Keys to unlock any door in front of you. Power to overcome any obstacle or challenge in your path. Put together, these two qualities allow you to accomplish anything you put your mind to. That gave me the freedom to dream big. I knew as long as I was willing to learn, the possibilities for my future were limitless.

To the Next Generation

As an adult, I have passed that nugget of wisdom onto my children. I want them to reach for the stars when they are deciding on goals they want to achieve. I want them to know it’s okay to dream big. Just be willing to work hard and learn. Don’t worry about failing. Everybody does. You get a lot more do-overs in life than people think. As my mom would also say, tomorrow is a new day, full of chances and possibilities. So learn as much as you can so you have more chances and possibilities. Also, don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. It’s your future, not theirs. They aren’t going to live it for you.

Don't Be Afraid to Follow Through

As an educational consultant I want to pass this on to my clients as well. As you go through the steps and build you own personal college portfolio, remember whose future you are working towards. Yours. Don’t be embarrassed about your ideas. Don’t be afraid to follow through. Give yourself the freedom to aim high and dream big. That’s why I encourage you to write out your values and goals. Then we can work together to build your plan. They may seem far and out of reach in the beginning, but you’ll be surprised at how far you’ll be able to soar if you have a solid strategy.
